STRATEGY11 MINThe Outlook Promotions Folder Now Judges Your Cold EmailMicrosoft documented a change in July 2026 that outbound teams have almost entirely missed: every inbound message Exchange Online identifies as bulk and promotional in nature now receives a Promotions tag, regardless of its bulk complaint level, and the feature finished rolling out to all organizations by mid-September 2026. Where an administrator turns on the Bulk moves enabled setting, that mail is delivered to an Outlook Promotions folder instead of the Inbox, and Microsoft says the system then learns from whether recipients drag messages in or out. Three details decide what this means for cold outbound. The tag is applied below the complaint threshold, so a clean sender is not exempt. The internal header that carries it is stripped before delivery, so no sender can measure it. And the Promotions tag takes precedence over the External tag, which means a classifier built for newsletters now overrides a security label. Authentication was the last decade's deliverability problem. Classification is this one.TYLER TRUFFI · OCT 16, 2026STRATEGY18 MINHow to Hire a B2B SEO Agency, and When Not ToOn October 15, 2026 we pulled the live search results for b2b seo agency along with an analysis of the ten pages ranking for it. Two things stood out. First, nobody has earned those positions with links: URL Rating across the entire top twelve runs from 0 to 11, and a Reddit thread with one referring backlink outranks a research piece from an agency with a Domain Rating of 73. Second, the three topics a buyer most needs settled, whether to hire an agency at all, what the engagement should cost, and how long it takes to show up in pipeline, are the three least covered topics on the page. This is the buyer's guide those gaps describe, including the cases where the honest answer is not to hire anyone.JOSH BERNSTEIN · OCT 15, 2026ANALYTICS12 MINYour October Rank Tracking Data Is Not ComparableBetween September 2026 and October 13, 2026 two independent things happened to the numbers SEO and GEO teams report on. Google escalated its defences against rank tracker scraping from blocking into active data injection, and Nozzle measured 8.0 percent of the SERPs served to trackers coming back poisoned rather than merely missing. Separately, the GPT-6 release stopped ChatGPT from attaching its utm_source tag or passing a referrer, so Cedric Huesler of Adobe measured roughly 31,000 ChatGPT visits a day disappearing from a 500 page sample while direct visits on the same pages rose by about 26,000 a day. Neither event changed anything about how those sites perform. Both events changed what the dashboards say. The practical consequence is that month over month comparisons spanning late September and October are measuring instrumentation, not performance, and reporting them as performance is the mistake to avoid this month.TYLER TRUFFI · OCT 14, 2026ANALYTICS11 MINPixel Consent Has No Lane for Cold EmailOn April 17, 2026 the Italian data protection authority adopted Provision No. 284, published in Gazzetta Ufficiale No. 98 on April 29, 2026, which treats an email open tracking pixel as access to a recipient's device under Article 122 of the Italian Privacy Code and therefore requires prior opt-in consent. Addresses collected from publication onward needed consent immediately. Addresses already on file got a six month transition that closes on October 28, 2026. France got there first, with CNIL deliberation 2026-042, whose own transition closed on July 14, 2026. Almost every guide written about these two measures assumes the sender has an opt-in form to amend and a subscriber relationship to lean on. Cold outbound has neither, which is why the deadline is a different and harder problem for prospecting teams than it is for lifecycle teams.JOSH BERNSTEIN · OCT 13, 2026STRATEGY13 MINHow to Choose a PPC Agency Now That Google Pulls the LeversChoosing a PPC agency in late 2026 means buying a different thing than it did two years ago. Google now sets bids, broadens match types by default, decides impression eligibility under a qualification policy, and since August 17 enforces cost targets in only one direction: campaigns that beat their target get corrected up toward it, campaigns that miss it do not get corrected down. The levers an agency used to pull manually are mostly gone. The work that remains is account structure, negative keywords, conversion data quality, feed hygiene, landing pages, and incrementality measurement, and almost none of it scales with how much you spend. That makes the industry default fee, a percentage of ad spend, the single worst way to pay for it right now.TYLER TRUFFI · OCT 12, 2026CONTENT11 MINGoogle Built a Fast Lane for UGC. You Cannot Use It.On October 8, 2026, Google added a page to Search Central describing the UGC Fresh Data Program: a dedicated pipeline that lets approved platforms submit fresh user generated content and engagement counters straight into Search, independent of the Indexing API and of ordinary crawling. Read the eligibility list and it becomes clear almost immediately that you are not the audience. The platform must primarily host user generated content at high volume, with a significant user base, public creator profiles, active moderation, OAuth 2.0 authentication and strictly validated JSON-LD. That rules out essentially every brand site. The program is still the most interesting thing Google published this month, because of what it says about where freshness in Search is going to come from.JOSH BERNSTEIN · OCT 11, 2026GEO16 MINGenerative Engine Optimization Agency: How to Vet OneGenerative engine optimization agency is a 2,200 search a month commercial term at keyword difficulty 15 and a $25.00 cost per click, the most expensive phrase in the agency category. Pull the result set and the proof layer is missing: a median URL Rating of 5 across nine ranking pages, an AI Overview citing a Reddit thread alongside a DR 39 agency page, and the two things a buyer most needs, how to choose and which agency type fits which business, scoring 38.7 and 33.9 out of 100 for coverage across that same set. Those are the worst covered topics in the category. This page is the evaluation layer the listicles skipped.TYLER TRUFFI · OCT 10, 2026STRATEGY12 MINYour Deliverability Checklist Guards the Wrong DoorThe compliance checklist every outbound team now runs, SPF plus DKIM plus DMARC, one-click unsubscribe, spam rate under 0.10%, comes from two documents with a scope line most people skip. Google's email sender guidelines govern mail sent to Gmail personal accounts, meaning addresses that end in gmail.com or googlemail.com. Microsoft's high-volume sender requirements, enforced from May 5, 2025, govern outlook.com, hotmail.com and live.com. Your B2B list is neither. It is Google Workspace tenants and Microsoft 365 tenants, where the gatekeeper is an IT administrator with a settings page, no published threshold and no appeals process. The checklist is still worth running. It is just not the thing deciding whether you land.JOSH BERNSTEIN · OCT 9, 2026LINK BUILDING12 MINLink Building Services: What You Are Actually BuyingLink building services is an 8,700 search a month commercial term at keyword difficulty 8, and the eight organic results holding the first page have a median URL Rating of 6. The category that sells links does not rank on them. That gap explains more about what you are buying than any agency pitch deck will: a wholesale placement market clearing at $112 a link, a stated willingness to pay of $509, and a new off-site signal that correlates with AI visibility more strongly than backlinks do. Here is how to read the price, the deliverable and the proof before you sign anything.TYLER TRUFFI · OCT 8, 2026ANALYTICS12 MINImpressions Up, Clicks Down: Check the DenominatorImpressions up, clicks down has been the most reported pattern in search analytics for a year and a half, and it drove a generation of decks arguing that AI Overviews had collapsed organic click-through rate. Google has since confirmed that a logging error over-reported impressions in Search Console from May 13, 2025 to April 27, 2026, that clicks were never affected, and that the bad window will not be corrected retroactively. An inflated impression count and an accurate click count produce an understated click-through rate by arithmetic. That does not mean AI is harmless to your traffic, and the independent research says it is not. It means the specific number most teams used to size the damage was measuring something other than what they thought.JOSH BERNSTEIN · OCT 7, 2026STRATEGY11 MINThe Email Warmup Blocklist Ends Domain RotationFor four years the answer to a deliverability problem was more domains, warmed faster. Two changes in September removed both halves of that answer. Validity launched Heatwave on September 3, a public blocklist for domains that manufacture sender reputation through warmup pools, and it listed over a million domains in its first week. Microsoft then began tying tenant sending quotas to tenant age, so a fresh tenant cannot carry meaningful volume no matter what you pay for it. Rotation as a hedge is now rotation as an exposure, and the listings do not expire.TYLER TRUFFI · OCT 6, 2026CONTENT13 MINThe Fake Headshots Are Not the StoryOn October 1, 2026, Google added three things to the page that tells site owners what good content looks like: a definition of main content, four named attributes its quality raters assess, and a paragraph calling fabricated creator profiles a form of deception. The trade press covered the third one, because AI headshots and invented bylines make a better headline than a taxonomy change. That was the wrong paragraph to lead with. The fake profile clause describes something Google struggles to detect at scale. The main content definition and the four attributes describe the model Google already uses to judge pages, now published in the document site owners are told to read, and they put your titles, your headings and your effort evidence inside the assessment.JOSH BERNSTEIN · OCT 5, 2026TECHNICAL SEO12 MINYou Did Not Survive The Spam Update YetGoogle released the September 2026 spam update on September 24 and said the rollout could take up to two weeks, which puts the end of the window around October 8. The impact did not arrive evenly. A first wave landed on the weekend of September 25, things quieted, and a second distinct change hit on September 30. That shape has a consequence most teams are getting wrong: a flat week-over-week line during a phased rollout is not evidence that you were cleared, and the remediation decisions being made right now off those lines are being made on incomplete data.TYLER TRUFFI · OCT 4, 2026ANALYTICS12 MINHard Bounce vs Soft Bounce Is the Wrong First QuestionEvery bounce report in every sending tool sorts failures into hard and soft. That split is a restatement of the SMTP response class, and it has quietly stopped being diagnostic: permanent refusals now arrive for reputation and policy reasons that have nothing to do with the recipient, and they sit in the same column as the genuinely dead addresses. Meanwhile the biggest authentication requirement in consumer email does not generate a bounce at all today, it generates a Junk placement, with rejection announced for a date Microsoft has not yet named. The enhanced status code is the field that separates these causes, and almost no sending dashboard surfaces it.JOSH BERNSTEIN · OCT 3, 2026STRATEGY13 MINThe AI Overviews Lawsuit Lost, And That Settles ItJudge Amit P. Mehta threw out five categories of claims brought by Penske Media and Chegg over Google's AI-powered search features, holding that publishers had pleaded an expectation of referral traffic rather than an agreement for it. The opinion is unusually candid about the damage: the court said it was not unsympathetic to publishers or to the knock-on consequences for journalists and educators whose content Google takes and repurposes without compensation. It dismissed the claims anyway. For anyone running an enterprise search program, that combination is the useful part, because it closes off the outcome a lot of teams have been quietly budgeting for.TYLER TRUFFI · OCT 2, 2026GEO12 MINBurying a Negative Result No Longer Buries ItErase.com released an analysis of 714 suppression campaigns run between August 2024 and May 2026, covering 2,461 individual negative results. The data says the thing nobody selling the service wants to lead with: the volume of positive content you publish barely separates the campaigns that cleared page one from the ones that did not. Starting position did. And the study's own AI Overview figures undercut the win condition the entire discipline is built on, because only 37.9% of AI Overview citations came from the top 10, which means a result pushed to page two is still live inventory for the answer that sits above page one.JOSH BERNSTEIN · OCT 1, 2026ANALYTICS13 MINIs The Multimodal Report New Data Or Moved Data?Search Console now breaks out a multimodal search type covering Google Lens, Circle to Search, image uploads and Chrome's search-this-image action. John Mueller, after checking with the team, said the data was not previously in the counts. Dave Smart reported matching impression and click declines beginning September 10 on several properties, which is what reallocation looks like and not what addition looks like. The queries dimension is unavailable either way, so the report tells you which pages visual searchers reached and never what they were looking for. Here is how to read a September delta without guessing, and why the num=100 removal a year ago is the precedent that matters.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 30, 2026STRATEGY11 MINThe EU AI Act Is Not Your Cold Email ProblemVendors are selling outbound teams an EU AI Act cold email compliance package built on Article 50, live since 2 August 2026. The text of Article 50 puts the marking duty on the provider of the generative system, and puts the deployer disclosure duty on deepfakes and on text published to inform the public on matters of public interest. A one-to-one sales email is neither. Meanwhile the ePrivacy Directive, in force since 2002 and transposed twenty-seven different ways, and GDPR Article 14, which requires you to tell people where you got their address, are the rules that actually decide the question, and almost nobody is buying a product for those.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 29, 2026TECHNICAL SEO12 MINThe Content Signals Policy Leaves Your Best Signal BlankCloudflare's Content Signals Policy added a usage layer to robots.txt: search, ai-input and ai-train, each set to yes or no. On the 3.8 million domains running Cloudflare's managed robots.txt, the company applied a default of search=yes and ai-train=no and deliberately left ai-input neutral. That blank is not a rounding error. It is the exact signal that covers retrieval augmented generation, the mechanism behind AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT search. Google has separately said the directive does nothing for Google at all. Both of those facts are true, and neither one is a reason to leave the field empty.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 28, 2026CONTENT10 MINStop paying someone to seed Reddit for ChatGPTA cottage industry sells brand mentions manufactured through Reddit seeding, promising a spot inside the answers ChatGPT and Perplexity hand back to searchers. Reddit spent July 2026 building an AI governance system specifically to catch that behavior, blocking millions of spam views and revoking millions of fake votes a day. One of the agencies running the play published its own audit in the same window: disclosed, honest engagement survives. Manufactured seeding gets removed roughly one time in five.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 27, 2026STRATEGY12 MINGoogle Native Checkout Turned On Without YouGoogle began notifying Merchant Center accounts this week that eligible products are automatically included in native checkout on AI Mode and Gemini, with nothing for the merchant to set up. That sentence moves a decision about where your customer pays from your roadmap to your platform integration. The previous version of this idea, OpenAI's Instant Checkout, was retired in March after reaching roughly thirty Shopify merchants. This one arrives with Walmart, Target, Visa, Mastercard and Stripe behind it, which is why treating it as a settings question rather than a strategy question is a mistake.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 24, 2026GEO16 MINAnswer Engine Optimization: What It Is And How To Do ItMost published answer engine optimization content stops at the definition. We pulled the live search results for the term on 22 September 2026 and found that only 4 of the 10 ranking pages cover implementation at all, with an average coverage score of 32.7 out of 100. Everyone explains what AEO is. Almost nobody tells you what to do on Monday morning. This page is built to answer every question the results are being asked, in the order they are asked, with the answer in the first sentence of each section.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 23, 2026ANALYTICS11 MINYour AI Impressions Number Is Not VisibilityGoogle finished rolling the Search Console generative AI report out to every property on August 31, 2026, and a lot of teams have spent the three weeks since treating a fresh impressions chart as proof that their AI search work is landing. It is not proof of that. It is an exposure meter with one metric, three dimensions, no query data, and a measurement base that overlaps the one you already report on. Here is what the number can carry, what it cannot, and how to put it in front of a board without misleading anyone.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 23, 2026STRATEGY12 MINCold Email Complaint Rate Is A Sample Size ProblemThe standard outbound estate runs 2 to 3 mailboxes per domain at 30 to 50 sends each, which keeps every domain far under the thresholds that trigger bulk sender rules. It also keeps every domain under the volume where Google reports reputation data at all. The result is an estate where the cold email complaint rate is invisible on a good day and catastrophic on a bad one, and the difference between those two days is one person clicking report spam.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 22, 2026GEO12 MINA Demo Vendor Gets Cited More Than GartnerTrellner Research pulled 7,534 citations out of Perplexity across 380 software buying categories and found that 59.8% came from sites outside the 100,000 most visited on the web. The number three source was not Gartner or Forrester. It was the blog of a demo automation vendor. If you sell software, the sources grounding AI vendor recommendations in your category are probably not the ones on your competitive radar.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 21, 2026LINK BUILDING11 MINLink Building For AI Search Is A Domain-Level BetTwo thirds of ChatGPT's top cited pages sit on DR 81+ domains with a median DR of 90, while two thirds of those same pages have a URL Rating under 10. Meanwhile 53% of link builders aim at DR 40 to 60 and point the link at the page they want ranked. A fresh Stacker dataset shows the low-authority tier does earn citations, but only on some engines. Link building for AI search is a bet on the domain, and most programmes are placing it on the page.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 20, 2026TECHNICAL SEO11 MINGoogle's Supplier Unit Only Appears If A Rival Triggers ItThe Google supplier unit gives direct providers a block next to the aggregators that outrank them, costs nothing to enter, and requires no data feed. It also only renders when an approved aggregator triggers a unit on the same query, which turns a competitor's eligibility into a precondition for your own.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 19, 2026STRATEGY11 MINCold Email DMARC Is Running On A Retired SpecRFC 9989 obsoleted RFC 7489 and took the pct tag with it, replaced the Public Suffix List with a DNS tree walk, and put non-existent subdomains under their own policy tag. Outbound programmes run more domains than anyone else in the building, which means they inherited more of this change than anyone else, and almost nobody has re-read their records since.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 18, 2026TECHNICAL SEO11 MINYour Image Pipeline Is Deleting Your Content CredentialsContent credentials are cryptographically signed provenance records that live in image metadata, not in pixels. Every resize, format conversion and recompression in a normal delivery pipeline destroys them. Microsoft Advertising has now made preserving them a policy obligation, which turns a performance habit into a compliance problem and hands it to the technical SEO team.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 17, 2026ANALYTICS11 MINAI Traffic Attribution Is Now A Bidding ProblemMost teams treat AI traffic attribution as a dashboard defect: a channel that shows up smaller than it really is. That framing is comfortable and wrong. The sessions getting mislabeled are the highest-converting sessions on the site, the error runs in one direction rather than scattering, and every automated bidding system you run is learning from the same contaminated table.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 16, 2026GEO11 MINGoogle's AI Contribution Pilot Pays For What You Cannot SeeThe Google AI contribution pilot pays when content contributes significantly to the creation of an AI-generated response, and Google's own help text rules out fact confirmation and post-generation links. That is a public statement that being cited and being used are different events. Every AI visibility dashboard on the market measures the one that does not earn.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 15, 2026STRATEGY10 MINYour Reply Rate Cannot Tell You What Is BrokenThe average B2B cold email reply rate sits near 3.4%, and almost every team reading that number draws the wrong conclusion from it. Three separate failures produce the same reply rate, they call for opposite fixes, and the industry data contains one inversion that settles the argument about which one you have.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 14, 2026TECHNICAL SEO11 MINProgrammatic SEO risk is site-level, not page-levelJohn Mueller said this month that a generated page set can cost a site Google's confidence in the whole domain, and that resolving it takes time and significant effort. The recovery data agrees: in Glenn Gabe's cohort of roughly 400 sites hit by the 2023 helpful content update, only 22 percent had recovered 20 percent or more of their lost traffic nearly a year later. Programmatic SEO risk does not sit on the URLs you can delete. It sits on the host.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 12, 2026CONTENT11 MINYour Content Didn't Get Worse. The Room Got Louder.Nine in ten marketing teams plan to publish even more this year. Only 6% say AI actually improved content performance, and 31.4% name organic search as the metric that fell furthest. The data says the mechanism is saturation, not quality, and it is not evenly distributed.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 11, 2026STRATEGY10 MINCold email sequence length is a complaint rate decisionInstantly's 2026 benchmark puts 58 percent of cold email replies on step one. The remaining 42 percent are spread across steps two through seven, sent to people who have already declined to answer. Google calculates spam rate daily and says 0.3 percent is where mitigation stops being available to you. At a thousand delivered messages a day, that is three complaints. Cold email sequence length is the single biggest lever on that number, and almost nobody sets it that way.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 10, 2026LINK BUILDING11 MINLinks are a gate, not a dialAhrefs put backlinks at 0.218 against AI Overview visibility across 75,000 brands. Semrush put authority at 0.65 against AI mentions across 1,000 domains. Everyone quotes one number at the other, and almost nobody quotes the third one: Semrush's own figure drops to 0.23 once you ask about share of voice instead of presence. Links buy you into the candidate set. They stop paying after that, and the follow attribute you negotiate hardest for tests as statistically neutral.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 9, 2026ANALYTICS11 MINGoogle DMA search changes: Europe is now your control groupOn September 8, 2026, Google restructured how vertical search services and travel results appear in Europe, under threat of penalties worth up to 5 percent of global turnover. Users outside the EU are untouched. That combination, a sharp date, a hard border, and an unaffected control population, almost never happens in search. Most teams will average it away and blame a core update in October.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 8, 2026CONTENT10 MINAI Overview local results are citing self-promotional listiclesOn August 12 Joy Hawkins documented an AI Overview for a local law firm query that quoted a single lawyer's self-promotional listicle as the source for every firm it named, linking to the listicle rather than to any of the businesses. Reproduced across browsers. The failure is not a ranking bug, it is a supply problem, and it tells you exactly what kind of content wins AI Overview local results right now.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 7, 2026STRATEGY10 MINLanding in the inbox is no longer the finish lineFor fifteen years cold email optimization ended at inbox placement. Gmail entering the Gemini era added a second gate: a model that summarizes threads, answers questions about the inbox, and in the AI inbox now in testing, filters low-priority messages away from the ones it decides are important. Your email is being read by software before a person sees it, and almost nobody is writing for that reader.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 7, 2026GEO11 MINGoogle's generative AI search control: who should opt outGoogle's generative AI search control is now live for every Search Console property. Opting out removes your content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features while leaving standard rankings alone. The catch: it is property-level until March 2027, the reporting that would justify the decision has no click data until December, and the three business models where opting out is defensible are narrower than the discourse suggests.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 7, 2026STRATEGY10 MINHow to vet a B2B prospecting data vendor in 2026Google's amended complaint against SerpApi rests on whether contractual language between Google and its licensors turns anti-bot measures into copyright access controls. A separate Reddit case against SerpApi and Perplexity was cleared to proceed in New York. Neither is about cold email. Both describe the supply chain most outbound data sits on, and most buyers cannot say which one theirs uses.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 6, 2026GEO10 MINReddit is winning the answer and losing the clickReddit is the single most cited domain in AI answers. It is also a company whose chief executive described search referral traffic as choppy and volatile on an earnings call, in a quarter where the stock fell more than 12 percent after hours. If you have been told to go do Reddit because Reddit ranks, you are working from a version of the map that stopped being accurate this year.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 6, 2026TECHNICAL SEO10 MINWhat August proved about PDF search visibilityOne marketing lead watched two PDFs worth 10,000 combined impressions fall to zero within six days. IRS forms vanished from filetype:pdf queries. Google fixed it inside a fortnight, which is exactly why most teams filed it under noise instead of asking the harder question about where their whitepapers live.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 6, 2026GEO9 MINGoogle just booked the hotelAI Mode can now track flight prices, price a stay in points, and take payment for a hotel room. Every one of those runs on named partners. For anyone whose category is next, the lesson is that some visibility is earned with content and some is granted in a contract, and telling the two apart is now a strategy question.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 5, 2026STRATEGY9 MINCold email compliance in 2026: the country by country decision tableA decision table for B2B outbound across the United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia and India, plus the distinction almost every team gets wrong: mailbox provider policy is not law, and following one does not satisfy the other.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 5, 2026ANALYTICS10 MINYour rank tracker is quietly dropping pagesGoogle's goto redirect turned every destination URL in the results into something a tracker has to chase rather than read. One vendor puts the cost at 500 to 1,000 requests per keyword. The reporting consequence is not higher prices, it is silent gaps in data you are still presenting as complete.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 5, 2026ANALYTICS9 MINNobody's dashboard worked on the first of the monthGA4 showed zero traffic on September 1, 2026 across many accounts. The data was delayed rather than lost, Google had not acknowledged it, and the status page said nothing. The interesting question is not what broke at Google. It is why a marketing team's entire view of its own website has exactly one point of failure.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 4, 2026STRATEGY9 MINYour AI SDR does not have a writing problemAI-written cold email replied at 4.1 percent against 5.2 percent for human-written, and booked meetings at 0.7 percent against 1.1 percent. The gap gets wider the further down the funnel you look. But the biggest single lever in the whole dataset was not copy at all. It was how many days you waited between sends.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 4, 2026GEO10 MINAI Mode citations are a release artifact nowGoogle moved AI Mode to Gemini 3.8 Flash on September 2. By September 3 the answers were coming back without links, and Google said it was a bug it would fix. The lesson is not that you should measure more carefully. It is that the surface you optimize for is versioned software, and nobody is sending you the changelog.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 4, 2026TECHNICAL SEO9 MINGoogle's EU Search dataset is open. What actually changes. The European Commission's July 16 measures forced Google to publish detailed licensing terms for a slice of its EU Search data. The recipients are AI chatbots and search engines with real EU footprints, and the downstream effect on how citations, rankings and ad targeting behave will show up in Q4 whether or not you touch the form.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 3, 2026STRATEGY9 MINOpenAI's ads hit a billion. Your cold email should notice.OpenAI confirmed a $1B annualized run rate for its ad business at the end of August. The number is not the story. The story is that a generation of B2B buyers is about to start seeing sponsored answers inside the same interface where they research your category, and cold email is the channel that will feel it first.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 3, 2026STRATEGY10 MINThe 620% number Williams-Sonoma just posted, and what B2B should copyWilliams-Sonoma said in its Q2 fiscal 2026 earnings call that its AI shopping assistant, Olive, drove a 620 percent revenue jump and a three times conversion lift. Home goods is not B2B software, but the parts of the mechanic that made it work are portable, and the parts that did not travel are worth naming out loud.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 3, 2026LINK BUILDING9 MINThe web rots. Google says that is fine.Mueller said no: Google does not penalize sites for old outbound links to domains that changed hands and now host junk. That kills the penalty rationale for quarterly link cleanups. It does not kill the reason to do them, which was always something else.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 2, 2026STRATEGY10 MINYour prospect is checking you in an AI answerThe verification step between open and reply moved. Buyers who used to click through to your site now ask an engine who you are, and if the answer is thin, your reply rate pays for it. Nobody in outbound is measuring this, and the fix belongs to a different team than the one being blamed.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 2, 2026GEO10 MINThe Search generative AI control: who should opt outThe Search generative AI control is now live for every Search Console property, and it removes your site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover. The report that sits next to it reports impressions with no clicks, so the toggle asks you to price a decision using half a P and L.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 2, 2026GEO10 MINAI Mode visibility is not one number anymoreGemini 3.7 Flash arrived in AI Mode for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, selectable from a picker. That makes AI Mode a set of surfaces rather than one, at the same moment Google's own reporting merges them into a single impression count. Here is how to decide what to measure.JOSH BERNSTEIN · SEP 1, 2026STRATEGY9 MINYour search campaigns are being migrated this monthAutomatic migration to AI Max begins in September for campaign-level broad match and automatically created assets, with Dynamic Search Ads following in February 2027. The settings carry over. The reporting baseline does not, and that is the part that will cost you an argument in October.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 1, 2026TECHNICAL SEO10 MINGooglebot sends PUT and DELETE. Your firewall says no.Under 1.5% of Google crawler requests use a method other than GET or POST, and they exist because your front end asked for them during rendering. Most WAF and API gateway defaults reject exactly those methods, which turns a rendering bug into a ranking one.TYLER TRUFFI · SEP 1, 2026CONTENT9 MINGoogle removed a click. It also removed the comparison step.Google began auto-expanding AI Overviews into AI Mode responses in late August 2026.
