Search for a B2B SEO agency and most of the first page is agencies. Some of them are service pages, which is fair enough. The rest are rankings of the best B2B SEO agencies, published by B2B SEO agencies, scored on criteria those agencies wrote. That is the market you are buying in, so it is worth knowing what the page is before you trust it.
We are one of those agencies, so read this with that in mind. What follows is not a ranking and we have not put ourselves on a list. It is the set of questions we would want answered if we were on the buying side, built from what the current results actually contain and, more usefully, what they leave out.
The gaps are measurable. An analysis of the ten pages ranking for this term on October 15, 2026 scores how thoroughly each topic is covered across the result set. The three thinnest topics are the build or buy decision, pricing, and how long results take. Those are the three things every buyer asks first.
What does a B2B SEO agency actually do?
A B2B SEO agency is a firm that grows a company's qualified organic demand by fixing how its site is crawled and understood, building content that matches how its buying committee researches, and earning the third party credibility that search and AI engines treat as evidence.
In practice the work divides into four jobs that get sold as one. Technical work makes pages reachable, fast and unambiguous. Content work covers the questions a buying committee runs, which in B2B means writing for an evaluator, a budget holder and a security reviewer who want different things from the same page. Authority work earns citations and links from places that already have standing. Measurement work connects all of it to revenue, which is the part most engagements do worst.
The distinction that matters in B2B is not the tactic list, which is broadly the same everywhere. It is who the content has to satisfy. A consumer query usually ends in one person deciding. A procurement question ends in several people agreeing, and the deal stalls on whichever of them is least convinced. That is why a strong B2B programme spends real effort on the unglamorous pages, the security posture explainer, the integration detail, the pricing logic, that nobody celebrates and every committee reads.
Most of that is shared with any competent search engine optimization engagement. What is specific to B2B is the committee, the longer evaluation window, and the fact that a few hundred of the right visitors beat a few hundred thousand of the wrong ones. If an agency's case studies lead with traffic multiples and never name a pipeline figure, it is optimising for the chart rather than the business.
What should a B2B SEO agency cost?
Pricing for a B2B SEO agency is set by scope and seniority rather than by a market rate, and the published ranges on the pages ranking for this term are self reported by the firms quoting them, so they are marketing rather than benchmarks.
We are not going to launder those numbers into a range and present it as research. What is available is better than a range anyway. The paid market prices this term in public, and that price is a direct read on what agencies think a client is worth.
Read the 30.00 dollar click first. Nobody pays that to sell a one off audit. It only clears if a signed client is worth five figures a year and stays more than a year, which tells you the shape of the engagement the market is built around: a retainer, measured in quarters, not a project. If a proposal is priced like a one off deliverable, either the scope is narrower than the category assumes or somebody is underwriting it with your results.
Three pricing structures are common and each one fails differently. A monthly retainer buys a team and a roadmap, and it goes wrong when the roadmap stops being revisited and you are paying for activity. A fixed scope project, typically starting with an SEO and GEO audit, buys a diagnosis and a plan, and it goes wrong when nobody is accountable for implementing it. Performance pricing sounds aligned and usually is not, because it pays on the metric that is easiest to move rather than the one you care about. Ranking counts are easy to move. Qualified pipeline is not.
The useful question is not what the retainer costs. It is what you stop paying for if it works. A programme that cannot name the paid spend, agency fee or internal hire it is meant to displace inside eighteen months has not been scoped against anything.
Agency, freelancer, or in house: which one fits?
The choice between an agency, a freelancer and an in house hire turns on one variable: whether the bottleneck is knowing what to do or having enough hands to do it. Those two problems have different answers and buying the wrong one wastes a year.
This is the thinnest topic on the entire result set, scored at 40.9 out of 100 across the ten ranking pages, and the reason is not subtle. Seven of those pages are published by agencies, and an honest treatment of this question concludes with do not hire an agency more often than any agency enjoys writing.
How thoroughly each topic is covered across the ten pages ranking for b2b seo agency, scored 0 to 100 by Ahrefs content analysis of the live US results on October 15, 2026. Lower means thinner coverage and a larger gap for a buyer
The pattern in that chart is worth naming. The best covered topic, B2B versus B2C SEO at 75.3, is the one a buyer has already settled by the time they search for an agency. The worst covered is the one they are actually trying to decide. Coverage tracks what is comfortable to publish, not what is useful to read.
| OPTION | BEST FIT | WHERE IT FAILS | WHAT YOU ARE BUYING |
|---|---|---|---|
| In house hire | You know the strategy, the work is continuous, and the domain is complex enough that context takes months to build | One person cannot cover technical, content, authority and analytics, so you hire a generalist and quietly staff the gaps | Institutional memory and availability |
| Freelancer or consultant | A specific, bounded problem: a migration, a technical diagnosis, a keyword model | Breadth and continuity. A single contractor is a single point of failure on an eighteen month programme | Senior judgment on one dimension |
| Agency | You need several disciplines at once and a view of what has already worked across comparable companies | Attention. You buy a pitch team and get a delivery team, and the roadmap drifts if nobody owns it internally | Range, pattern recognition and throughput |
| Agency plus internal owner | Most B2B programmes above roughly a few million in revenue | It costs more than either alone and needs one named internal person with real authority | Execution capacity with accountability attached |
The last row is what we recommend most often, and it is deliberately the least flattering to sell. An agency without an internal owner produces a lot of work and little compounding, because nobody on the client side is positioned to say no to the wrong half of the roadmap. If you cannot name that person before you sign, fix that first.
There is also a real case for hiring nobody yet. If your positioning is unsettled, your site cannot be edited without an engineering ticket, or you have no way to tell a good lead from a bad one, an agency will spend its first two quarters on problems that are yours to fix. We say this in sales calls and lose some of them.
How long before B2B SEO shows up in pipeline?
B2B SEO typically produces ranking movement in one to three months, meaningful qualified traffic in four to eight, and defensible pipeline contribution in two to four quarters, with the long tail driven by how long your own sales cycle runs.
Those windows are judgment from engagements rather than a published study, so treat them as a planning model and hold us to the reasoning instead of the numbers. The reasoning is arithmetic. Technical fixes land fast because they remove friction on demand that already exists. New content has to be crawled, evaluated and then accumulate the signals that move it, which takes months. And a lead generated in month five does not become pipeline until it completes a cycle that, in B2B, routinely runs two or three quarters on its own.
That last term is the one buyers forget and agencies rarely volunteer. If your average deal takes seven months to close, an engagement starting in January cannot show closed revenue before late in the year no matter how good it is. Any agency promising attributable revenue inside a quarter is either selling to a shorter cycle than yours or counting something other than revenue.
One caution on the honest version of this timeline: it is a reason to start sooner, not a licence for an agency to defer accountability. Each phase has leading indicators that should be visible on schedule, and an engagement that cannot show them at month three is not on a long road, it is lost.
How do you tell a good B2B SEO agency from a good deck?
Separating a capable B2B SEO agency from a well packaged one comes down to specificity under pressure: whether the firm will commit in writing to which pages should move, on what terms, by when, and what it expects to be wrong about.
Start by understanding what you are reading when you read a list of the best agencies. On the current results, four of the ten ranking pages are rankings published by agencies, including Onely's own research into the best B2B SEO agencies. There is nothing underhanded about this and the work in some of them is genuine. It is simply not independent, the criteria are chosen by the author, and the author is eligible.
The structure of the page is the more revealing part, and it says something encouraging about how little authority this category actually requires.
| POSITION | WHAT IS RANKING | DR | UR | REFERRING BACKLINKS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A Google AI Overview, with sitelinks to two agency pages and a YouTube video | n/a | n/a | n/a |
| 2 | Stratabeat, agency service page | 62 | 6 | 13 |
| 3 | OuterBox, agency service page | 78 | 11 | 50 |
| 4 | Polaris Agency, its own list of the ten best agencies | 44 | 4 | 5 |
| 5 | First Page Sage, its own top agencies list | 82 | 4 | 24 |
| 6 | Altitude Marketing, agency service page | 60 | 8 | 16 |
| 7 | A Reddit thread asking for recommendations | 95 | 0 | 1 |
| 8 | Onely, its own best agencies research | 73 | 4 | 13 |
| 10 | YesOptimist, its own thirteen best list, with three Google sitelinks | 61 | 6 | 31 |
| 11 | RevenueZen, agency service page, with three Google sitelinks | 61 | 8 | 43 |
| 12 | Draft.dev, an explainer on what agencies do | 59 | 4 | 1 |
URL Rating is the page level authority measure, and it never exceeds 11 anywhere on this page. The strongest single result carries fifty referring backlinks and the page at position seven carries one. A thread of people asking each other for recommendations outranks a research piece from a firm with a Domain Rating of 73. Nobody has won this term with links, because nobody has had to.
Note also where the Google sitelinks landed: on the pages at ten and eleven, not at the top. Those sitelinks are generated from headings, which is the same mechanism we took apart in the answer engine optimization pillar, where the lowest authority page on the result set earned three of them that Forbes and PwC did not. Structure is doing work that links are not.
So the evaluation questions are less about pedigree than buyers assume. Ask which specific pages the firm would expect to move in the first ninety days and why those. Ask what it would do if the first two quarters underperformed. Ask it to name a client it declined, and a tactic it has stopped recommending, which separates firms with a point of view from firms with a service list. Then ask how it builds link building and digital PR into the plan, since authority is the slowest input and the easiest to fake with volume.
What does AI search change about hiring?
AI search changes the deliverable more than the discipline. The work that earns a citation in an AI answer is largely the work that earned a ranking, with one addition: being quotable in a single passage, and being corroborated somewhere other than your own site.
The result set reflects a market in transition. An AI Overview occupies the top of the page, and one of the ranking agencies has already renamed itself a B2B SEO and AEO agency in its title tag. Coverage of AI visibility across the ten pages scores 57.2, which is mid pack: everybody mentions it and few treat it seriously.
Two questions separate a firm that has done this work from one that has added the acronym to a slide. First, how does it get a client corroborated off site, since answer engines lean on third party agreement and a claim that appears only on your own domain is weak evidence. Second, what does it report, because AI visibility reporting is where measurement is least mature and most easily dressed up. We went through the reliability problems in that data when we looked at how far rank tracking numbers can be trusted, and the same caution applies with more force to citation counts.
For most B2B companies this is a sequencing question rather than a budget question, and the honest answer is that the two overlap heavily. The structural work that makes a page retrievable by an answer engine, clear headings, a direct answer near the top, specifics a model can lift, is the same work that makes it useful to a procurement committee reading at speed. You are not choosing between the two. Any agency that prices them as separate programmes is selling the same labour twice.
How should you measure the engagement?
Measure a B2B SEO engagement on qualified pipeline contribution, with a small set of leading indicators that should move earlier, and refuse to accept ranking counts or raw traffic as the headline number in either direction.
Measurement was scored at 62.2 across the ranking pages, so it is not ignored. What is missing is the harder half: naming the number before the engagement starts, when it is still possible to be wrong in public. A reporting framework agreed in month nine is a story about month nine.
Industry context changes what the measurement should emphasise but not its logic. A regulated category where claims need review will move slower on content and faster on technical gains, which is the pattern we see across cybersecurity programmes and in the kind of B2B engagements where a security questionnaire sits between the lead and the deal. The number still has to be pipeline.
