STRATEGY12 MINArticleHow To Vet A Cold Email Agency In 2026Hiring a cold email agency in 2026 means buying deliverability engineering, not copywriting. The rules that get quoted in sales calls, Google's bulk sender requirements and Microsoft's high volume sender requirements, are real and primary sourced, but both are scoped to consumer mailboxes and to senders above 5,000 messages a day. Almost no B2B outbound program hits that threshold, and almost no B2B prospect reads mail at outlook.com. The inboxes that matter are corporate Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace tenants, governed by tenant level filtering, and those have no published threshold to comply with. That gap is where agencies hide. This piece gives the primary sourced version of what each rule actually says, the arithmetic on Google's 0.30 percent complaint ceiling at realistic B2B volumes, the four questions that expose a reseller, and the first 90 days a competent engagement should produce.JBJosh Bernstein · OCT 26, 2026TECHNICAL SEO11 MINArticleHow long does SEO take? Leave It Alone. On October 21, 2026 Google rewrote its Control what you share with Google Search page to add two sections, one covering the robots meta tag, data-nosnippet and X-Robots-Tag, and one covering the Search generative AI control in Search Console. The practical effect is that four control names now appear together as though they were variations on one idea. They are not. The Search generative AI control is site-wide and set per Search Console property, with include, exclude, and inherit from parent as the options, and exclude removes your links and your impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. Nosnippet is page level and removes your text snippet from every Google surface at once while also blocking use of the page as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Max-snippet caps both snippet length and how much content can be used as that input, except where permission was granted separately. Data-nosnippet is text level and documented only against search result snippets, with nothing in Google's documentation extending it to AI Overviews or AI Mode. Three scopes, four names, one documentation section, and the wrong pick costs you the regular snippet or the measurement baseline you would need to judge the decision.JBJosh Bernstein · OCT 21, 2026ANALYTICS13 MINArticleSEO Reporting Software: What It Cannot Show YouOn October 20, 2026 we pulled the live United States results for seo reporting software, plus a coverage analysis of the ten pages ranking for it. Five of the nine organic results in the top eleven are reporting vendors, four of the nine sources Google's AI Overview cites are reporting vendors, and the highest URL Rating in the organic top eleven is 13. Nobody has earned these positions with links. The coverage analysis says the thinnest topic across the whole result set is what is changing in the category, scored 25.9 out of 100, and that gap is the interesting one: Google's Search Generative AI performance reports, announced June 3, 2026, publish impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates while withholding clicks and queries entirely. No connector can surface a number the source does not publish. This is the buyer's guide for what reporting software does well, what it costs, and what it structurally cannot see.TTTyler Truffi · OCT 20, 2026ANALYTICS12 MINArticleThe Industry Average Reply Rate Has One AuthorFour benchmark pages published in 2026 report an average cold email reply rate between 3.1% and 4.5%, which looks like the ordinary spread you would average away. It is not. The 3.43% figure that shows up as the consensus number originates in Instantly's own platform data covering January 1 to December 18, 2025, published under a 2026 title. Woodpecker's 2026 benchmarks page carries 3.43% as its platform-wide reply rate and attributes it, on the page, to the Instantly report. Searchlab's 2026 statistics page carries 3.1% and attributes it to Woodpecker, and every other figure on that page is attributed to a third party as well. Saleshandy is the outlier at 4.5%, and it is the only one of the four that says what it divided by: total replies over total emails delivered, with replies classified into Interested, Not Interested, Auto-Reply, Out of Office and Do Not Contact. So the number that looks corroborated is one dataset wearing several brand names, and the number that looks wrong is the one that showed its work. That inversion matters more than the spread, because cross-source agreement is the heuristic humans and AI engines both use to decide a statistic is safe to repeat.JBJosh Bernstein · OCT 19, 2026CONTENT12 MINArticleYour GEO Checklist Is Mostly PlaceboTwo researchers at the University of Toronto spent 90 days collecting how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answer commercial questions, finishing with 158,099 answers carrying 468,037 citations, and then did the one thing the GEO industry has mostly skipped: they compared pages within the same website instead of across different ones. The checklist items collapsed. FAQ blocks looked worth 18.1% more citations when you compare site to site and were worth nothing, slightly negative in fact, when you compare two pages on the same site. Summary boxes, author markup, schema.org markup and page speed behaved identically. Two things survived: whether the title matches the question a person asked, and whether the best paragraph on the page matches it. And all of that content work put together explains 2.8% of the variation in which pages ChatGPT cites, against 32% explained by the engine's own retrieval step. Every page ChatGPT cites is one its own search found first. That is a different business than the one most GEO retainers are selling.TTTyler Truffi · OCT 18, 2026GEO14 MINArticleAI Mode SEO: More Links, Still No Click DataOn October 15, 2026 Google announced what it called continued and substantial increases to the inline links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews answers, moved those links higher in responses more often, added image thumbnails to the Dive Deeper section, expanded timely news carousels to more countries and languages, and began testing a box at the top of an answer for the one or two official places on the web to complete a task. In the same week it confirmed that Search Console still will not break out clicks for AI surfaces. Barry Schwartz made the obvious point: links keep getting more prominent and the one metric publishers want keeps not arriving. Read those two facts together and the strategy changes. More inline links spread across more sources at a click rate Pew measured at roughly 1 percent is a redistribution, not a windfall, and the slot that actually carries value is the new official place box. AI Mode SEO now means competing for a two result slot you cannot measure, which makes first party instrumentation the only honest scoreboard.JBJosh Bernstein · OCT 17, 2026STRATEGY11 MINArticleThe Outlook Promotions Folder Now Judges Your Cold EmailMicrosoft documented a change in July 2026 that outbound teams have almost entirely missed: every inbound message Exchange Online identifies as bulk and promotional in nature now receives a Promotions tag, regardless of its bulk complaint level, and the feature finished rolling out to all organizations by mid-September 2026. Where an administrator turns on the Bulk moves enabled setting, that mail is delivered to an Outlook Promotions folder instead of the Inbox, and Microsoft says the system then learns from whether recipients drag messages in or out. Three details decide what this means for cold outbound. The tag is applied below the complaint threshold, so a clean sender is not exempt. The internal header that carries it is stripped before delivery, so no sender can measure it. And the Promotions tag takes precedence over the External tag, which means a classifier built for newsletters now overrides a security label. Authentication was the last decade's deliverability problem. Classification is this one.TTTyler Truffi · OCT 16, 2026STRATEGY18 MINArticleHow to Hire a B2B SEO Agency, and When Not ToOn October 15, 2026 we pulled the live search results for b2b seo agency along with an analysis of the ten pages ranking for it. Two things stood out. First, nobody has earned those positions with links: URL Rating across the entire top twelve runs from 0 to 11, and a Reddit thread with one referring backlink outranks a research piece from an agency with a Domain Rating of 73. Second, the three topics a buyer most needs settled, whether to hire an agency at all, what the engagement should cost, and how long it takes to show up in pipeline, are the three least covered topics on the page. This is the buyer's guide those gaps describe, including the cases where the honest answer is not to hire anyone.JBJosh Bernstein · OCT 15, 2026ANALYTICS12 MINArticleYour October Rank Tracking Data Is Not ComparableBetween September 2026 and October 13, 2026 two independent things happened to the numbers SEO and GEO teams report on. Google escalated its defences against rank tracker scraping from blocking into active data injection, and Nozzle measured 8.0 percent of the SERPs served to trackers coming back poisoned rather than merely missing. Separately, the GPT-6 release stopped ChatGPT from attaching its utm_source tag or passing a referrer, so Cedric Huesler of Adobe measured roughly 31,000 ChatGPT visits a day disappearing from a 500 page sample while direct visits on the same pages rose by about 26,000 a day. Neither event changed anything about how those sites perform. Both events changed what the dashboards say. The practical consequence is that month over month comparisons spanning late September and October are measuring instrumentation, not performance, and reporting them as performance is the mistake to avoid this month.TTTyler Truffi · OCT 14, 2026ANALYTICS11 MINArticlePixel Consent Has No Lane for Cold EmailOn April 17, 2026 the Italian data protection authority adopted Provision No. 284, published in Gazzetta Ufficiale No. 98 on April 29, 2026, which treats an email open tracking pixel as access to a recipient's device under Article 122 of the Italian Privacy Code and therefore requires prior opt-in consent. Addresses collected from publication onward needed consent immediately. Addresses already on file got a six month transition that closes on October 28, 2026. France got there first, with CNIL deliberation 2026-042, whose own transition closed on July 14, 2026. Almost every guide written about these two measures assumes the sender has an opt-in form to amend and a subscriber relationship to lean on. Cold outbound has neither, which is why the deadline is a different and harder problem for prospecting teams than it is for lifecycle teams.JBJosh Bernstein · OCT 13, 2026STRATEGY13 MINArticleHow to Choose a PPC Agency Now That Google Pulls the LeversChoosing a PPC agency in late 2026 means buying a different thing than it did two years ago. Google now sets bids, broadens match types by default, decides impression eligibility under a qualification policy, and since August 17 enforces cost targets in only one direction: campaigns that beat their target get corrected up toward it, campaigns that miss it do not get corrected down. The levers an agency used to pull manually are mostly gone. The work that remains is account structure, negative keywords, conversion data quality, feed hygiene, landing pages, and incrementality measurement, and almost none of it scales with how much you spend. That makes the industry default fee, a percentage of ad spend, the single worst way to pay for it right now.TTTyler Truffi · OCT 12, 2026
