Why comparison pages win 32.5% of AI citations

The single content format that gets quoted most, and how to build one that ranks.

JBJosh BernsteinManaging Partner · JUN 24, 2026 · 9 MIN READ

Comparison and alternatives content earns more AI citations than any other format, by a wide margin.

The reason is structural: the buyer's first real question is almost always some version of what are my options, and a well-built comparison answers it in a way an engine can lift directly. Clear verdicts, sourced claims, and a clean table beat narrative every time.

The mistake teams make is spamming thin listicles. Engines reward genuinely useful comparisons that state differences plainly and cite their claims. Vague, hedged pages do not get quoted.

KEY TAKEAWAYBuild three comparison pages for your top gaps, lead each with an extractable verdict, and cite every claim. It is the highest-leverage content you can ship for GEO.

CONTENTYour GEO Checklist Is Mostly PlaceboTwo researchers at the University of Toronto spent 90 days collecting how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answer commercial questions, finishing with 158,099 answers carrying 468,037 citations, and then did the one thing the GEO industry has mostly skipped: they compared pages within the same website instead of across different ones. The checklist items collapsed. FAQ blocks looked worth 18.1% more citations when you compare site to site and were worth nothing, slightly negative in fact, when you compare two pages on the same site. Summary boxes, author markup, schema.org markup and page speed behaved identically. Two things survived: whether the title matches the question a person asked, and whether the best paragraph on the page matches it. And all of that content work put together explains 2.8% of the variation in which pages ChatGPT cites, against 32% explained by the engine's own retrieval step. Every page ChatGPT cites is one its own search found first. That is a different business than the one most GEO retainers are selling.TYLER TRUFFI · 12 MINCONTENTGoogle Built a Fast Lane for UGC. You Cannot Use It.On October 8, 2026, Google added a page to Search Central describing the UGC Fresh Data Program: a dedicated pipeline that lets approved platforms submit fresh user generated content and engagement counters straight into Search, independent of the Indexing API and of ordinary crawling. Read the eligibility list and it becomes clear almost immediately that you are not the audience. The platform must primarily host user generated content at high volume, with a significant user base, public creator profiles, active moderation, OAuth 2.0 authentication and strictly validated JSON-LD. That rules out essentially every brand site. The program is still the most interesting thing Google published this month, because of what it says about where freshness in Search is going to come from.JOSH BERNSTEIN · 11 MINCONTENTThe Fake Headshots Are Not the StoryOn October 1, 2026, Google added three things to the page that tells site owners what good content looks like: a definition of main content, four named attributes its quality raters assess, and a paragraph calling fabricated creator profiles a form of deception. The trade press covered the third one, because AI headshots and invented bylines make a better headline than a taxonomy change. That was the wrong paragraph to lead with. The fake profile clause describes something Google struggles to detect at scale. The main content definition and the four attributes describe the model Google already uses to judge pages, now published in the document site owners are told to read, and they put your titles, your headings and your effort evidence inside the assessment.JOSH BERNSTEIN · 13 MIN
